This year Puerto Rico has been trending a whole lot… lots of conversations around the fiscal crisis and what can be done to fix the issues on the island. In the last few years Boricua baskteball star Carmelo Anthony has been spending time on the island, building and restoring basketball courts in some of the island’s underserved community. Doing his part to promote positivity in a way reminiscent of the great Roberto Clemente, Carmelo wanted to have a positive impact on the youth and he is doing a great job inspiring kids to stay off the street.
Then this happened…
In June 2015, National Basketball Association (NBA) star Carmelo Anthony bought an expansion franchise in the North American Soccer League, to be based in Puerto Rico. The team, named Puerto Rico FC, held its debut in the 2016 fall season. On August 14, 2015, Adrian Whitbread was announced as the clubs inaugural coach, with Thomas Payne being appointed as president on November 10, 2015.
Now it’s time for the first face off between the NY Cosmos and the Puerto Rican Football Club to be held in Long Island this Saturday, July 30th. As if this were not special enough this event will also serve as a celebration for Colombian Heritage.
Will you join us this Saturday and be one of the first fans to support our future Boricua champions.
