The second day of events kicking off the Loisaida Festival weekend will feature a panel of scholars and researchers paying homage to two of the cornerstone contributors to the LGBTQ Latin@ arts community: drag performer Mario Montez and performance artist Alina Troyano (a.k.a Carmelita Tropicana).
Following screenings of José Rodríguez-Soltero’s The Life, Death, and Assumption of Lupe Velez (1966) and Ela Troyano’s Your Kunst Is Your Waffen (1996), there will be a Q and A with Ron Gregg, Ela Troyano, and Carmelita Tropicana (a.k.a Alina Troyano).
For those who need a refresher–Carmelita Tropicana has been performing, writing, and acting since the 1980s with humor and fantasy. Her work has been showed at various cultural, educational, and artistic spaces throughout the country and globe.
The panel discussion and film screening is a part of the larger day of events that explores the vast creativity and expression of the LGBTQ Latin@ artists and community activists.
