This year marks the 24th anniversary of Comité Noviembre…Puerto Rican Heritage Month. Through the years Comité Noviembre, CN, has kept its mission clear and uncompromised to promote, teach and create an awareness of the rich culture, language and heritage of the Puerto Rican community. CN celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of Puerto Ricans in all aspects of life and society from science, medicine and technology to music, dance and theatre.
Through the "Lo Mejor de Nuestra Comunidad" award, Comité Noviembre recognizes outstanding individuals who are the unsung heroes of our community and who are making a difference in the Puerto Rican communities of this country. Puerto Ricans whose pride in their heritage and strength of character have empowered themselves and inspired others to make significant impact on the community are recognized. The recipients of this award are chosen by Comité Noviembre from nominations submitted by the community. These individuals are honored at the kick-off celebration of Puerto Rican Heritage Month.
This year I have been humbled by a nomination from some of the people that have supported my movement for years. That nomination has resulted in being selected as one of the recipients of this very prestigious award. I am humbled by this recognition and the pride knowing that the people alongside me are also some of the people that inspire me in their respective spaces.
The 2010 Lo Mejor Recipients are: Anita Antonetty (community organizer), Javier E. Gomez (actor/reporter, community volunteer) Brenda Jimenez Peralta (Associate Director of Agency Development/North East Region Big Brother, Big Sister of America) Frances Lucerna (Executive Director, El Puente) Lance Rios (President & CEO, Being Latino, Inc.) Jose Santiago (News Director, WBAI) George Torres (Founder, Sofrito for Your Soul and Capicu Poetry & Cultural Showcase) Yesenia Aponte-Meléndez (Student Organizer/Researcher, El Punto de la Montaña).
A special recognition to Taller Boricua (Marcos Dimas, Fernando Salicrup, Nitza Tufiño and IrmaAyla), on its 40th anniversary of promoting and supporting community artists and cultural diversity.
