Flaco Coquito: A New Healthier Holiday Tradition

Special thanks to this week’s advertisers and partners for enabling us to bring you your #DailySofrito. We strive to partner with people and companies that love Latino culture as much as our readers.

Today’s Sponsor Spotlight goes to Flaco Coquito

Many of you may be asking….esperate… What is Coquito?

Coquito is an eggnog-like (sometimes alcoholic beverage) traditionally served in Puerto Rico. It is made with egg yolks, rum, coconut milk, coconut cream, sweet condensed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The drink is commonly associated with the Christmas holidays, where it is traditionally served along with other holiday food.

Boricuas (sharing people that we are) all over the world have been making and sharing homemade coquito with our multicultural friends and coworkers for many years opening the doors for companies to step in and make a quality coquito for general consumption for the masses.

BUT there is one HUGE problem… Coquito is one of those guilty pleasures that is a high in sugar content making it prohibitive to people like me who struggles with diabetes. There is a need for a healthier coquito that can be enjoyed year round by people who are health conscious.

Cynthia Sepulveda-Caballero saw a way to solve that problem and help keep a family tradition alive by taking her husband’s very delicious (but unhealthy) coquito and experimenting with low sugar  alternatives.  The response from friends and family was overwhelming and seeing an opportunity in helping other families preserve their holiday tradition, Cynthia (and her family) launched FLACO COQUITO, the Healthier Coquito.

I recently invited Cynthia and her family to a healthy lunch meeting at The Evil Olive Pizza Bar, Brooklyn’s home to the baked stuffed pastelillo (another healthy twist on a cultural favorite) and she came prepared. I blinked and before you know it… she created a small bar at The Evil Olive of different flavors of healthy coquito… I was in heaven. I sampled the chocolate, white chocolate, the tropical blend and the no sugar added traditional… I honestly liked them all but the most original innovative flavor for me was the tropical blend, as it took my taste buds on a whirlwind tour of the tasty fruits of Puerto Rico.

The fact that I can still enjoy one of my favorite (and delicious) holiday traditions without a negative impact on my health is what really wins me over at the end of the day. I will be making my order this week…and adopting a new healthier tradition.

Flaco Coquito has an extensive menu of flavors that include Traditional Coquito, Strawberry,Mango,Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate,White Chocolate with Strawberry,Caramel Vanilla Latte,Vanilla Latte,Heath Mocha (contains almonds), Butterscotch,Mocha Mint,Pumpkin and a brand new Dulce de Leche.

One important thing to note: Flaco Coquito is for the family, all flavors are shipped as virgin drinks (contains no alcohol) but for those of you that like to mix a more mature version of Coquito, Cynthia does provide detailed instructions on how to do it the right way.

Visit their website today and find out how they can make your holiday party sweet & healthy. If you are interested in the business side of things… read this cool Q&A with Flaco Coquito founder Cynthia Sepulveda-Caballero from a blog called Tofu Con Sazon
