Day 8 of my #21DayJournal

#21DayJournal is a series of sometimes unedited tweets, blog posts, podcasts, Facebook / IG lives and Linked In posts written between April 11th and May 1st during the COVID-19 quarantine.

20+ years ago, I got an invite from a young lady named Helene, who invited me to be part of a backpack giveaway. She asked that we flex our growing community presence to help kids in need get ready for back to school.

a friendship was born…

Years later, she would take on a leadership role at the American Diabetes Association. She asked me to be on the board of directors for a program called Por Tu Familia, a Latino initiative to educate our community on living a full life despite having type 2 diabetes.

When I joined this initiative I had no idea… that the day would come when I would start feeling thirsty, would pee excessively and get dizzy during work hours. If I had not joined Por Tu Familia, I may have died going undiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Helene saved my life… and helped me save lives. Because of the work we did together… we were able to inspire the ADA to invest in social media.

Not an easy task, but Helene was relentless and believed in me.

Here is some info on how we did it… with the whole committee’s support.

I say all this to say, today was Helene’s 50th birthday… and today a few dozen of her many friends, family members and colleagues joined her on a Zoom call to wish her the happiest of birthdays. She is buena gente, and to me personally an angel here on earth.

In attendance was Luz Carty, who just lost her fiance but managed thru the grief to beat her own battle with COVID-19. It was great to see her smiling when just days ago she was fighting for her life.

Thank you again Helene… we thank you for your service & friendship.

Some days we mourn but today we celebrated life.

Abrazos desde lejos.
