The Untold History Of The Piragua…

Piragua Every day I learn something new…

I don't know, maybe everyone in the world knew this but me…THE PIRAGUA WAS NOT INVENTED BY A BORICUA…

Que barbaridad…jajaja

Ever since I have been on twitter I have come to realize that some of the cultural things I love about Puerto Rican culture have siblings in other countries. I say that because when I say Piragua, someone from the West Coast will be like "we call that raspados". Today I mentioned a Piragua in passing and one of my twitter buddies from Louisianna @edythemighty sent me a link to Wikipedia that outlines the history of the Snow Cone and traced it back to Japan in 1887. I have further learned that it also goes by "granizados" (Cuba), Shaved Ice (Hawaii), "Cholado" (Colombia and Venezuela) and "Frio Frio" (Dominican Republic).
