Literary Angels- or “Lit Angels”- started out as a writing assignment at#LaSopaNYC: The School of Poetic Arts. Author/Educator Rich Villar asked our students to write Persona Poems in the spirit of master poet Miguel Algarins “Nuyorican Angels” chapter from his book, Love Is Hard Work.

The beauty of the poems that came out of the class was so rare, that we thought we would honor the idea with its own live event where our students and special guests will share poems about the human- and superhuman! condition! We found it only appropriate to host the show at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe!

++PLUS++! This event serves as our current La Sopa recognition ceremony for Fall 2014, which include seasoned and emerging poets living in New York City and New Jersey!

After nearly 7 years of producing some of the top cultural events in NYC – Capicu Cultural Showcase unveiled details of their latest project “The Capicu School of Poetic Arts” (La SoPA). This educational workshop series for ages 17 & up was born from the need for a communal space dedicated to the development of artistic skills that allow artists  to express themselves creatively while learning core principles that foster the longevity of their crafts. The series will be taught by some of NYC’s most seasoned teaching artists.

Led by Capicu Culture’s Award Winning Creative Director Juan “Papo Swiggity” Santiago and incorporating #LaSopa cofounder and #TeamCapicu member  Jani Rose along with legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe Slam Team coach and #TeamCapicu member Keith Roach, La SoPA is a movement to nourish our generation of writers and performance poets of color and our friends in New York City and the surrounding areas.
