Scholarship Alert: Ronald McDonald House Charities® HACER® Scholarship Program

The initiative encourages local Hispanic High School seniors to apply for HACER Scholarships

NEW YORK, October 28, 2013 Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) New York Tri-State Area is excited to announce its partnership with Grammy®-winning singer Luis Enrique as the new voice of the HACER Scholarship Program public service announcement (PSA) campaign.  This new campaign is designed to create awareness and encourage local Hispanic High School students to apply for the scholarship. The campaign also reinforces RMHC’s commitment to advancing education and supporting young people in our communities.

“I’m thrilled to be part of this worthwhile initiative that gives young Latinos the opportunity to obtain a higher education. I’m always in favor of giving back to our Hispanic community,” stated Luis Enrique. “It’s important for our young people to be aware that in order to succeed in this country they need to take advantage of the opportunities they encounter and work hard to achieve success. The future of our community is in their hands,” added the famous salsa singer.

This program is championed by NY Tristate Hispanic Owner/Operators. Their support helps students from across the New York Tri-State Area who work hard to get good grades, but unfortunately may not have the financial resources needed to attend an institution of higher learning. “Many students in our Hispanic communities face many obstacles to get the education they are hoping for,” stated Roberto Madan, McDonald’s Owner/Operator and Chairman of the local HACER Scholarship NY Tri-State Chapter. “To help them accomplish their educational goals, every year the RMHC New York Tri-State Area along with RMHC Global and the support of the McDonald’s Owner/Operators Association, offers scholarships to deserving Latino high school graduates in financial need through our Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources (HACER) program,” added Madan.

Since its inception, the RMHC/HACER scholarship program has awarded over $6 million dollars to aspiring college-bound Hispanic students from the New York Tri-State Area who meet the RMHC/HACER scholarship requirements. Students must plan to enroll in a two year or four year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school upon graduation; have at

least one parent of Hispanic heritage; be a legal U.S. resident; be less than 21 years of age and reside within the geographic boundaries of the chapter (NY, NJ, and CT).

This year the RMHC New York Tri-State/HACER scholarship program will award a total of $280,000 in four-year college scholarships, as follows:

  • One $40,000.00 scholarship awarded to a student pursuing a career in education. The winner will receive $10,000.00 in each of the four years of his/her college education.
  • Fifteen $16,000.00 scholarships will be awarded. The winners will receive $4,000.00 in each of the four years of his/her college education.

Through this awareness campaign, the HACER Scholarship Program hopes to motivate qualifying students to apply. The PSA will begin airing in early October 2013 on all local Spanish-language TV and Radio stations, aiming to reach thousands of Hispanic students in the New York Tri-State area and encourage them to start the application process by visiting the RMHC/HACER website The deadline for applications is January 21, 2014.
