My Three Words For 2016

George+Torres+HBO+Latino+Red+Carpet+Yandel+Vpg4wRxW59ml (1)8 years ago… I stopped participating in the New Year ritual of making a list of “resolutions”. I believe in self-improvement and I came across a blog post in 2014 by one of my personal favorite influencers, Chris Brogan. It was a simple post with little or no explanation as to why he was choosing 3 words instead of resolutions… but I instantly got it, and so it began.

I want you to understand the concept of this exercise, so here is how Chris explains it in his words (published in 2014)

How to Choose Your Three Words

Lots of people pick words that remind them to take a certain action, or to be a certain way. Over the years, I’ve used both methods. Sometimes, my words are a verb. Other times, they’re a bit more complex. The idea is to use the words as triggers for actions you intend to take, and maybe other actions you seek to avoid.

So 2014 was a year of being uncomfortable with being comfortable. I suffered some health setbacks due to lack of focus. I made a decision to pursue a career as a social influencer / strategist and build on my success with Sofrito Media Group after a 10 year career with T-Mobile came to an end. I simply decided that I needed to build my own dream job since I could not seem to find what I was looking for anywhere else.

In 2015… my 3 words were Decide.Commit.Succeed  [Read The  2015 Post Here]

And in both my personal life and professional I did just that.  in April of 2015 I moved my office from Long Island back to The Yard in Williamsburg, an amazing co-working space with beautiful conference rooms so that I can do my consultations.  I also had my first full calendar year as a full time business owner and had a pretty good year. I also deepened our relationships with brands we love like Hispanicize, Toyota, Project Enye, Royal Carribbean, Colgate and added new ones like Jet Blue.

For me to make this year my personal best the words that will guide my actions are as follows;

Here is my breakdown…

Family & Friends will be a focus this year. With me moving closer to the city, I am positioned to re-enter my social circle on a personal level. Although many people I love support me and are around me when I am working, I am committing to making more personal time for them to do things unrelated to my worklife.

In addition I will learn to do more things that scare the sh*t out of me… I overcame a lot of obstacles this year and unlocked lots of opportunity by doing things that really scared me. So yeah… I will be doing more of that.  The importance of this word was highlighted in the first Persicope I saw today from my dear friend Sili Recio from My Mamihood who told us “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough!” —> Check it out for real.

One of the key takeaways from 2015 was that not all the business owners I work with are able to invest in the social media services that we offer. Listening to their feed back I started developing workshops as well as training services to help them build the team that will help them succeed. Our biggest success was the “Why Aren’t You Crushing It” workshop which we sold out and taught in 5 different states in just 8 weeks (and Philly is next… just saying). In addition just two days before the end of the year we hosted an open house where we saw 38 small business owners from diverse industries that came to do a FREE 20 minute consultation to strategize and shift their social to get better results. We even met Joana Ayuso, who drove 3 hours to Brooklyn from Rhode Island to sit with us to get ready for 2016.

It is clear that my connection to this part of the work is very near and dear to me. I will continue to find ways to make our services accessible to entrepreneurs, small businesses and non-profits.

On a personal side…I also started taking acting lessons with my good friend Victor Cruz and landed a lead role in  a staged reading of Bad Uncle (by Rob Torres) at Repertorio Español and closed the year with a small role in a short directed by Elroy Martinez called The Dark Edge. I have a ways to go before I go all in, but I am enjoying the process of learning this new craft.

If you have ever been to my Instagram account… you already know I like to travel. While I have a few places I love to frequent like Puerto Rico, Miami, Philly, San Antonio and Los Angeles… this year I am looking forward to doing some international travel which means I will be developing a lot more content around travel. I just want to meet people, hear their stories and see things I have only seen on the Travel Channel.

I say all of that to say…

These are the three words that will drive me to have the biggest year of my life and I promise to bring you along for the ride. Follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and get updates on what is happening with me.
