Latinos In Alaska? No Me Digas…

Anchorage So if you have been keeping up with the blog lately, you already know that I have decided to virtually visit each of the United States and discover Latino culture whereever it may be… I figured if we are now the "majority", there should be Latinos pretty much anywhere we look. So two days ago we discovered some really cool stuff in Alabama… and now we are ready to see what is happening in Alaska.

Now Alaska is pretty much the last place in the USA, I would ever think of finding anyone Latino… we are normally from very warm climates and do not handle the cole very well… even in NYC we constantly complain of what is called "Un Frio Pelu".

Nonetheless… we found a lot of stuff when we started browsing google. It turns out that high-paying jobs are luring Mexicans to Alaska. Since 1980, Alaska's Hispanic population has nearly tripled from 9,000 to 25,000. Hispanics now make up 4.2 percent of the state's residents, up from 3.2 percent in 1980. On a less positive note, Latinos are overrepresented in the Alaska Prison System.

As far as organizations and cultural collectives we found the following…

Alaska The Hispanic Affairs Council of Alaska (HACA) on Facebook…

The Hispanic Affairs Council of Alaska (HACA) is a nonprofit Alaskan corporation established in 2007, but with roots in 2005. The core values of HACA are to unite, educate and empower members of the Hispanic community through outreach, coalition building and promoting cultural awareness.

The website listed is http://www.hacaonline.org but leads right back to the Facebook page.

Then we found a Latin music group, Son Latinos from Anchorage Alaska that according to the You Tube story was founded after an impromptu Mothers day celebration. Check out the video…

Now if you know me you know I love cultural expression via spoken word and hip hop, so I was very excited to see that only two weeks ago there was a poetry / hiphop showcase at a popular spot aptly called "Latinos". I am going to do some more reasearch and find out more about that movement…stay tuned.

In addition to that the local Telemundo affiliate has a show called "Latinos En Alaska" which is billed as Alaska's first and only spanish language show dealing with the local community.

Fangoria300300 Last but not least… our friend Louis Pagan from Hispanicize posted an unrelated article that I thought was cool about a pop singer named "Lady Alaska" who by their account was a Latina version of Lady Gaga…but get this, she was hot 30 years ago…before Madonna or Lady Gaga. Check out the full story here…

Do you know something that is happening in Alask that we should add…? Let us know in the comments below.
