Latino Trailblazers: David Gonzalez

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Celebrate the importance of Latino culture with Being Latino, Best Buy and our partners.

We’re paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. A new tribute airs each weekday from September 17 – October 12

Today’s Trailblazer is David Gonzalez, distinguished co-editor of the Lens Blog and “Side Street” photo-essay feature for the City Room blog. He was a long-time member of the metro desk of The New York Times, his work has been mostly inspired by the city’s neighborhoods and how they reflect the larger social and cultural issues in American society.

His awards include a 2008 Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors for “House Afire,” a three-part series on the life of a struggling Pentecostal storefront church. He also won Columbia University’s Mike Berger Award in May 1992 for his coverage of New York City and its neighborhoods.

Before becoming a journalist, he worked for several non-profit agencies active in New York City’s Latino and African-American communities. He was also the project coordinator at En Foco, a Bronx-based arts group which supports emerging Latino photographers.

Mr. Gonzalez was born and raised in the Bronx. He earned a B.A. in psychology from Yale University and an M.S. degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Join us in honoring David Gonzalez this Hispanic Heritage Month

No one more deserving of such recognition as Mr. Gonzalez. Not only as an uncomparable voice of our communities as a Journalist, but his photojournalistic works have documented inner-city experiences like very few others have and are not limited to his beloved Latino and Bronx Communities. Wishing him mucho successes & the blessings of great health so that he may continue to enrich The World!! Kudos to Victor Cruz on his impressionable presentation here and to Being Latino on the choices.
