Latino Trailblazers: Calixto Chinchilla

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Celebrate the importance of Latino culture with Being Latino, Best Buy and our partners.

We’re paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. A new tribute airs each weekday from September 17 – October 12

Today’s Trailblazer is Calixto Chinchilla, creator of the urban
influenced New York  International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF),  a 13 year old showcase of about 110 films from the U.S. and Latin America that is expected to welcome tens of thousands people including moviegoers, actors, filmmakers and industry executives.

“The need to better represent Latinos in film motivated Chinchilla to “showcase the works of the hottest emerging Latino filmmaking talent in the U.S. and Latin America, offer expansive images of the Latino experience and celebrate the diversity and spirit of the Latino community.” With that sole mission in mind, NYLIFF launched in 1999 with its first major supporter: HBO. Soon after an entire village — corporations, non-profits and media outlets, as well as generous angels — have ensured that the festival remains an annual affair. “

Mr. Chinchilla is a fine example of Latino perserverance, proving that “dreams” can come true and Life is limitless, ideas should never be rashly dismissed. When I met Calixto in 2002-3 and The New York International Latino Film Festival was in it’s infancy, he shared some of his vision for it, with amazing belief and determination. Today, after attending for over a decade and supporting in diverse capacities, I am totally in beaming pride of his accomplishments. Back then, I advised him “This is going to go waaay beyond what you have imagined thus far and it will join you to people, resources that will help you take this beyond your wildest dreams Calixto, keep believing.” It is an honor well bestowed, on a humble soul and despite my foregoing understatement, my biggest honor is the friendship we share. Keep going Calixto- Lights, Action and blessings!
