HBO Latino Premieres Romeo Santos: The King Stays King

IMG_6713On the evening of April 30th, HBO Latino gathered press, tastemakers and more to celebrate a concert that will be airing on the network. Romeo Santos, el Rey of modern bachata was the guest of honor. His concert, “The King Stays King- Sold out at Madison Square Garden” will air in it’s entirety with never before seen footage and interviews with the love song crooner.

The concert also includes duets with some of music’s biggest names in both mainstream and Latin music. Usher, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Wisin y Yandel, Luis Vargas and others joined him in the packed arena. On the success of the concert Romeo said, “He was very happy with the end result. It was a good day”, he beamed.
The Dominican and Puerto Rican singer sure has come a long way in his musical journey. The same can also be said for how Latinos are represented in the media and television. Mingling in the crowd were powerful creatives whom are taking the reigns with no signs of letting go. It was a thrill to chat with producers, magazine editors, poets, and journalists to name a few. The common thread: To create content in our voice, relevant to the new Latino experience. Now that’s exciting and inspiring!
What a pleasure it was to run into Michelle Herrera Mulligan. (center left) She is the editor in chief of Cosmopolitan for Latinas. She spoke to me about how she hopes to depict Latinas in the pages of her magazine. “I really want to show us in a glorified way. I want there to be lights, makeup, hair and glamour. Keeping in mind that these women work in science and technology. They are mothers and educators. They have stories and experience”.

Denise Bidot is a perfect combination of spicy and sweet! The plus size model and star of Nuvo Tv’s “Curvy Girls” shared a red carpet tip with us. “Always exhale right before they snap that photo. Let it all out”, she giggled.

Also in the house was the beloved Peggy Robles Alvarado. The poet, author and powerhouse was recently featured on another HBO Latino program entitled,“Habla Women”. She shares her personal story of beating the odds in this extraordinary documentary. She is accompanied in this photo by our photographer of the evening, Albert Areizaga of Taino Image.

Mover and shaker Ulysses Terrero was happy to support his friend, Romeo Santos. When talking about producing and sharing creative projects he says, “You have to put it all out there. Don’t sit on your projects, share them.” Great words from a man who knows.

Make sure you catch Romeo Santos in concert Friday May 3rd, only on HBO Latino and join the conversation on twitter with the hashtag #HBOLATINO
