Graciela Grillo-Perez, The First Lady Of Latin Jazz Passes Away

I am sad to report that Afro-Cuban music pioneer Graciela Perez Grillo has died in New York City at age 94 of natural causes.

Graciela Grillo-Perez (August 25, 1915 – April 7, 2010) was born in Havana, Cuba and in the early 40s she moved to New York to seek success as the first lady of Latin jazz. She is the sister of Machito and was the leader of a progressive all female Afro-Cuban Jazz band.

Her albums include…
1963 - Este es Graciela - Graciela con Machito y su Orquesta
1965 - Intimo y Sentimiental - Graciela con Machito y su Orquesta
1972 - Yo Soy Asi

Que en paz descanse y su musica viva para siempre.

As I am,

George Torres
