Day 11 of my #21DayJournal

#21DayJournal is a series of sometimes unedited tweets, blog posts, podcasts, Facebook / IG lives and Linked In posts written between April 11th and May 1st during the COVID-19 quarantine

To say that I feel like we are under siege with COVID-19 it is an understatement and I lived under siege in my life. I grew up in ENY / Brownsville during the crack epidemic in NYC (circa 1984). I survived a racial attack, gang violence in school, and the streets yet I have never been more afraid than I am today.

What am I afraid of?

It probably not what you think…

I am afraid of not having left my mark in the world. I am obsessed with legacy… with redemption… and making a difference. Every project I ever worked on has an element of filling a need that I had as a teen. I want to be a lighthouse for the kid that doesn’t see a way out.

I am afraid that much of my most impactful work is not attributed to me because I played small in an effort to not appear arrogant or boastful. Ihave opened doors for major players in the space, created orgs, developed conferences / events, coached community leaders, ideated award winning campaigns, created health awareness campaigns, started community initiatives, responded to community crisis both here and in Puerto Rico and have helped seed funding to meaningful international projects that impact children living on the margin. I am well respected in uber Latino marketing circles even though I am the wild card… I am also a voice in the arts community where we planted roots in Brooklyn to fight gentrification thru poetry and art.

in 23 years, I never thought to stop and document times and places… so much of my time writing is piecing things in my rough drafts and then trying to find the proof of when it happened to tell the most accurate story I can.

This moment threatens that in the worst of ways…

I feel like I am running out of time.

This is what keeps me up at night above and beyond the natural fear I feel for my family, friends, and community.

I said it, I named it

Tomorrow I will face it again.

Abrazos desde lejos.
