Capicu Community Interview: Wendy Angulo from Canvas of Words

wendyAlways feeling the pulse of “what’s next” in the NYC Cultural circle, Capicu Creative Director, Papo Swiggity Santiago takes some time to sit with Wendy Angulo, curator of the new (SOLD OUT) Canvas of Words show about to captivate the borough of Queens.

The following is a transcript of that conversation…

Buen Provecho…

Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a New York City Latina raised in Caracas, Venezuela. I have a law degree from Venezuela and work as a Paralegal for a Midtown Law Firm. I am a mother of a 10 year old boy and I live in Queens.

How did you get introduced to the cultural and poetry scene in New York City?

I was introduced to the cultural and poetry scene in New York by my best friend Angela Mejia who invited me to Maria Rodriguez Open Mic Series at Common Space in Forest Hills, Queens.

Who has inspired you to become a writer? Past and present?

My inspiration to write both past and present has been life experiences both as a child and now a woman. Writing is therapeutic and the best outlet to express my feelings, trials and tribulations and my triumphs.

What does our audience have to know about Canvas of Words?

What the audience should know about Canvas of Words is that this is a unique event, never seen before, where the poets both Distinguished and Emerging will perform alongside original art pieces created for the poems they will recite.
This is a showcase that will serve as a platform for up coming artists and poets of the borough of Queens to promote their art and network at the event.

How do you envision Canvas of Words in the next five years?

I envision Canvas of Words in the next five years to become Queens number one Annual Poetry event that everyone looks forward to attend and that new writers and artists envision to be part of.

Who is your ‘dream poet’?

My “dream poet” is Pablo Neruda.

What has been your biggest pleasure and your biggest challenging in putting this show together?

My biggest pleasure in putting the show together has been the opportunity to work with all these Wordsmiths and see my dream develop into a reality and the biggest challenge has been coordinating with everyone’s schedule.
