This is something that me (and my team) are very passionate about.

So when I talk about Pa’l Pueblo and say that “we deliver Christmas to children in Brooklyn” I do not think people really understand the spirit of this project. So I think I need to elaborate and tell the story about why this project is our biggest and most passionate initiative of the year.

That was the thought when my business and I decided on our first philanthropy as we grew roots in Williamsburg Brooklyn for our cultural showcase. The venue owner Jason Tennant introduced us to a community leader named Jessica Arocho, who asked us to consider helping her with a toy drive. We said yes and created an event called Pa’l Pueblo which 6 years  later would become an underground North Pole operation serving hundreds of kids each year in the Bushwick United Headstart.

I don’t think we really knew what we were getting ourselves into… It would be great… I agreed to be Santa and Papo was a reindeer ( he would eventually be promoted to elf) we would give the toys out and we would feel good about giving back. Everybody wins!

But it gets deeper than that.

So here I am, in full Santa gear walking in the building at a small group of kids saw me and they rushed to welcome me with hugs. The teachers tried with no luck to keep them in formation but the magic of Christmas was too strong. I got bum rushed with a series of hugs and requests for toys for Christmas as well as the occasional apology for not ‘behaving’. I was a rock star… a dream come true  for some of these kids who do not have much hope that they will get something really cool for Christmas. So you cannot imagine how happy they were to see me walk into their class later with a bag full of toys. Their smiles were literally one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Their smiles fueled our passion to do more.

What evolved was no TOYS FOR TOTS program (no disrespect to them… they do amazing work) but this was an organic movement to create a Christmas Experience. We do not just hand gifts to children and call it a day. This is a community effort to change the way these children experience the holiday despite financial difficulties. It is a partnership with the school, teachers, administrators, parents and YOU the person that comes to Capicu to feed that part of you that no place else can.

This about us just as much as it is about the kids… we value the ideals of youth empowerment and know that at the core of that… kids need to enjoy their youth. The teachers often give us feedback as to what kind of toy would be ideal for particular children based on what their interests are… so we have some elves at work. For me personally, playing Santa to the kids is the biggest gift I get every year… as I reminisce on similar programs that we had to depend on when I was a kid growing up in both Brooklyn and Puerto Rico… I get to give back and that is an amazing feeling.

5 years later…and today we are gearing up for the 7th installment of the Pa’l Pueblo Toy Drive with our Coquito & Cupcakes Comedy fundraiser that will officially set off a new season of giving for the supporters of this initiative.  This pre-holiday mixer and art showcase for professionals at the EvilOlivE Pizza Bar featuring the Flaco Coquito (the healthier coquito) and the local yumminess of Kookies Treats (home of the Cafelo Cupcake infused w/ Bustelo)!

Every year, putting together our annual Pa’L Pueblo charity is our very first step in bringing our own families together in the Christmas spirit of giving. It’s a huge undertaking, trying to raise the funds to buy toys for over 500 local children, but are committed to the fullest and we have been blessed with a generous community that has helped us reach our goals for these kids each and every year!

This has become #TeamCapicu’s flagship event and every Capicu employee donates their pay for these two events to make sure that no child is left without a smile on their face. RSVP if you are interested in attending the event.
