I had the opportunity to attend the Bronx CHP CHAT, (Community Health Action Team) this past week, which is a coalition of organizations dedicated to helping raise awareness and implement education in the community about deadly diseases. This event was hosted by Sanofi-Aventis and hosted by the American Heart Association. During this time I met Damaris Lasa who let me know about this campaign called Go Red For Women and the Latino initiatives surrounding it. 

So today, I am sharing...and asking you...to help spread the word, both about the campaign and the casting calls so that together we can help save lives!

2010 Go Red Por Tu Corazón New York City Casting Call Event Alert

 

WHAT:	Go Red For Women®’s nationwide Hispanic casting call event will kick off on February 5, 2010 with the participation of Nuestra Belleza Latina 2008 winner, Melissa Marty in New York City.   We invite New York City’s Latinas to participate on February 5, 2010.
WHO:	Go Red for Women is looking for Hispanic women to join the Go Red Por Tu Corazón movement by sharing their heart stories and helping to raise awareness of heart disease in Hispanic women. Latinas who share their stories have the chance to become a spokesperson for the cause – representing Go Red Por Tu Corazón in marketing materials, at events and online at GoRedCorazon.org.

Sunday Sofrito: Latinos Are Standing Up For Haiti

I am here planning my agenda for this week, and as I look through my invites on facebook and my email, I have to say I am very proud on how Latinos have really stepped up in our communities to lend a hand and financial help to our Haitian brothers and sisters. 

As I mentioned in my last blog post about Haiti, there are lots of ways to help but I also wanted to take an opportunity to highlight organizations that I have either worked with or I support that are making moves to help in this crisis. They need your support and they are building strong coalitions with the NYC Cultural Arts Diaspora to make giving easy...and entertaining.

 On January 27th, I will be joining JLV NightLife and Better Future International  as they present HELP FOR HAITI. 

There will be  Live Percussion With Nick Herman and Guests,  Live Dance Performances, 50/50 Raffle and Giveaways, Poetry by educator/writer Jose Vilson, Special Guest Stand-Up Comedian From Laugh Lounge, NY,  Doors open at 6pm Happy Hour 6-7pm, Complimentary Dinner Buffet 6-7pm By Chef Javier Molina, Free Salsa Lesson By Cynthia La China and Hector Pena @ 7PM

• Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc goes to Haiti to assist victims of the earthquake.

• Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Sorority Inc. has joined the Red Cross to get bottled water and other necessities to the people of Haiti.

• Omega Phi Beta Sorority Inc starts 5 month campaign at Hofstra University to raise awareness and funds to aid in earthquake relief.

• Rebel Diaz Arts Collective will host an event on 1/23 called I Am Haiti/Yo Soy Haiti featuring the talents of Mariposa, Dj Mellow G, Hache St, Reyes Del Bajo Mundo, Sally Hyppolite, Danza, Delaceiba, Los Andino del sur del Bronx, Dj Eli Efi, Dj Laylo, Kahlil Khan, Casa Atabex Ache, Yenny Love, Bodoma, Elaine Eversley, Fesah Rollins, Atiyya, KumbaCarey, Division X, and the Dominican and Haitian collaboration.

• Being Latino and United Dance Studio will be hosting a #Latinos4Haiti on 1/30 to benefit UNICEF's relief efforts.

The Poetry of Noemi ‘Siren’ Soto: How He Became A Ghost

There is metal where his heart should be
cold and heavy, he carries it everywhere
deep within his hollowed out chest he made himself
He used to be warm blood pumping
but now he walks with the burden of the wounded
staggering with the stench of fickle love

He licks my lips trying to heal what he made bleed
but he is shrapnel tongued
and I still have the word "beautiful" embedded in my skin
Hand in hand, we put kisses in boxes that we hid under his bed
tucked away never to be found
Only we knew it's hiding place

He broke himself down into small pieces so as not to overwhelm me
and with two fingers, he placed each jagged piece under my tongue
until he became a part of me

If I could, I would take his beating heart
and place it in my pocket
so that I may know what it is like to be truly close to him
He always kept his skin thick
so I couldn’t find my way underneath
and burrow myself within him
Arm’s length was never far enough

We shared secret moments tangled up in bed sheets like nooses
Told me how much he cared for me as he hiked up my skirt
That’s the only way to get a man to like you, you know
I tried to hold on to him
but he’d turn into a ghost to slip right through my fingers
just had to watch as he floated away from me

We were always a silent train ride home deep in thought
skin still sticky with sweat
mind swimming with regret and confusion
Trying to make sense of it all

Nowadays I watch him from a distance
careful not to step too close
He’s always knew how to make his way in

And as for me…
Well, I have become a closed fist
ready to unleash all of the bitterness he placed so sweetly inside the palm of my hand.

Noemi ‘Siren’ Soto is a Brooklyn, NY native who was born and raised in Coney Island. Growing up with the deteriorating amusement park as her backyard, she has always able to find the beauty in all things gritty and broken. This continues today as her writing proves to be vivid and brutal, yet full of hope.

She has been recently published in South Jersey Underground, has performed at Nuyorican Poet's Cafe and will be performing this Friday, January 22nd at Lolita Bar for the "If I could... " themed poetry event hosted by Vanessa Martir.
