I had the opportunity to attend the Bronx CHP CHAT, (Community Health Action Team) this past week, which is a coalition of organizations dedicated to helping raise awareness and implement education in the community about deadly diseases. This event was hosted by Sanofi-Aventis and hosted by the American Heart Association. During this time I met Damaris Lasa who let me know about this campaign called Go Red For Women and the Latino initiatives surrounding it.
So today, I am sharing...and asking you...to help spread the word, both about the campaign and the casting calls so that together we can help save lives!

WHAT: | Go Red For Women®’s nationwide Hispanic casting call event will kick off on February 5, 2010 with the participation of Nuestra Belleza Latina 2008 winner, Melissa Marty in New York City.
We invite New York City’s Latinas to participate on February 5, 2010.

WHO: | Go Red for Women is looking for Hispanic women to join the Go Red Por Tu Corazón movement by sharing their heart stories and helping to raise awareness of heart disease in Hispanic women. Latinas who share their stories have the chance to become a spokesperson for the cause – representing Go Red Por Tu Corazón in marketing materials, at events and online at GoRedCorazon.org.

WHY: | Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Hispanic women, but is largely preventable if Latinas make the right choices for themselves and their families, and help inspire millions of other Latinas to do the same. · Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 455,000 women each year, which is about one every minute. · More than 8 percent of Hispanics, age 18 and older, have heart disease. · On average, Hispanic women are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than Caucasian women.

I went to the AHA casting call at Grand Central last year. MTV host Julissa Bermudez spoke about heart disease prevention--very cool. I will def be at Macy's this year.

We don't always stop to think about it, but when I think about my family, so many people either have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. That is the beginning of heart disease!
We're looking for Latinas to step forward and tell their stories so we can inspire our entire community to build healthy lives - to PREVENT illness and disease. Tell me how heart disease has affected your family, your friends, your co-workers, your life... Tell me what you do to be healthy and strong? I want to know.
The more stories we have the more we can put them out there and inspire our community.
