Because we HAD to leave Cuba in order to have safety and personal security, it is never far from our minds. I, personally, left most of my family there, and thus most of my heart. One of my biggest sadness is that my grandmother, aunt and uncles died there after I left and I will never get the chance to see them again. I keep the hope that I will see my cousins, their children and grandchildren someday.

Like your parents, I left Cuba as a teenager, I have been here (in USA) since 1961, not a day goes by that I don't cry about my lost Cuba. That Cuba of my dreams that only exsists in my dreams, that Cuba that I will never see again. My mother died without going back, my father is 92 years old, one of my brothers died at age 45, all my aunts and uncles have died, from my generation, three have died, one is in a home for the elderly, another one is dying of cancer, and so on...
I hope you understand this poem:

Exilio

Al salir de mi tierra
era yo una adolescente,
no entendía de guerras
ni de la maldad de la gente.

Separada de mis padres
sola, triste, y desconsolada,
añorando a la perdida patria
y rezando a los altares:
que no demore este exilio,
que no me ahoguen los mares
que de mi tierra me apartan.

¿Y cuándo llegará
ese esperado día
en que vuelva la calma
y podamos regresar
a la tierra perdida?

Ese dichoso día,
que tengamos libertad
de pensamiento y palabra,
¿cuándo llegará ese día
que nos caliente nuestro sol
y nos devuelva la alegría?

¿Cuántos años han pasado?
Ya nos hemos hecho viejos,
el tiempo, no en balde ha llegado
a nuestra juventud quitarnos
y a secarnos el pellejo.

¿Cuántos cubanos han muerto
sin volver a nuestro suelo?
¿Cuántos cubanos quedaron
cubiertos por otro cielo?

Algún día regresar,
es nuestro más grande anhelo;
a la patria que dejamos;
a volver a nuestro suelo.

¡Que no mueran más cubanos,
cubiertos por otro cielo!

THIS ARTICLE TOUCHED MY HEART IN A WAY THAT ONLY A PERSON WHO HAD BEEN THROUGH A GREAT LOSS CAN IDENTIFY WITH.
I FEEL THAN IN THE WAITING NOT ONLY I LOST MY COUNTRY BUT MOST OF MY FAMILY, FRIENDS, A WAY OF LIFE AND THE WAITING CONTINUES AND AT TIMES I WONDER IF THIS YEARNING FOR A PLACE THAT SOMETIMES I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS REAL OR IN MY DREAMS, WILL EVER CEASED.
I'M FLATTER, HAPPY AND DELIGHTED MY DAUGHTER,WHO WAS BORN HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND HAS NEVER SEEN CUBA, CAN SEE INSIDE MY SOUL, MY HEART, MY THOUGHTS AND MY FEELINGS WITH SUCH CLARITY.
I'M DEEPLY TOUCHED.
THANK YOU TINA.

Like a majority of "Half Generation" Cubans raised in the United States, We all now know the sacrifices that our parents, grandparents, uncles and family members had to make in order for their children to be raised in a free and safe society. Like the story says; it is know, as we reach the age our parents were when they had to make "the decision", we begin to understand a small amount of the sacrifices and uncertainties that they faced.
I, for one, with children of my own can never phanthom a day like that. I will never be able to tell them how much I understand and love them for their sacrifices.
One of my goals is that someday I will have the opportunity to travel to Cuba, as a free and democratic country to show my family where it all began and hopefully tell them the stories.

Kristine

Very honest and touching article. A good read for the many people who sadly have no insight into the personal struggle of the Cuban-American community. I hope your parents are one day able to have their dreams realized.
